✖ Canon Setting:The Bleach world boils down to this: shinigami are the protectors of souls, ushering them between the land of the living and the after life - dubbed as Soul Society. The good go to Soul Society and the bad are sent to "Hell". When a soul falls through the cracks, they become something called a "Hollow" - which literally means that they have a giant hole in them. This stems from the concept that once you die, there's a chain on your chest that binds you and if your soul isn't purified, it eats away at you until all you feel is a hunger to devour more souls. Once a soul is eaten, they can never be recovered and they cannot be sent for eternal peace.
Hollows reside in Hueco Mundo, the land of Hollows and the Shinigami, their enemies, reside in Soul Society. To explain how Isshin fits into this setting, it's easier to first describe Soul Society, then the different realms. Soul Society is just like any other society. You're brought in, and depending on which district you're from, it determines your status. If you have enough spiritual pressure (reiatsu), you can apply to be a Shinigami and train to join the corps. If not, you can make your life in other ways. Either way, you have a second chance at "life" before you "die" again. However, some people are born into Soul Society, and due to the very competitive nature of living in Soul Society, those people are often the upper echelon of society. Isshin Kurosaki, nee Shiba, was once part of the Great Four Families of Soul Society. Either you were a high ranking member of the Shinigami, or you had some pull in other facets of the feudal system.
The Shinigami are divided into 13 squads, each with their own specialty. The "Gotei 13" have Captains, Vice Captain and then a Third Seat before making their way down the corps. Each squad has a specific function that they perform to protect Soul Society, and to ensure that the balance of Life and Death remains constant. Which where the Hollow come in; once a Shinigami defeats a hollow, they cleanse their soul. Hollow generally cannot control their mania once they get consumed by their hate. So, once a Shinigami defeats one, their souls are cleansed and they either go to Soul Society or Hell. Conversely, another group of individuals called the Quincy, didn't cleanse the souls of Hollows, but destroyed them completely. In an effort to combat this, the Shinigami committed horrendous crimes and killed them all in the name of maintaining this balance.
✖ Character History: @ Bleach Wikia
✖ Character Personality:
Like his son, Isshin keeps his "deeper" emotions buried under a surface of self-confidence. Rather than being sarcastic like Ichigo, Isshin portrays endless optimism and happiness. Though, it also means that he displays his emotions to the EXTREME: EXTREME DADDY HUGS, HITHER TO MY MANLY BREAST, SUPER DADDY KICK TO PREPARE YOU FOR LIFE. It's undeniable that he loves his children with all his heart. He might act perverted or be completely insane in his attempts to get Ichigo, but his children are his life. Without them, he'd be utterly and completely lost, they're all he has.
Isshin is a widower, he lost his wife to the Grand Fisher hollow when Ichigo was 9. To that extent, it explains why he does things to such extremes. He compensates for the lack of a mother, despite the fact that his youngest daughter assumed the maternal role in the family. He loves his children for both parents, he's overbearing because he's being protective for both parents - but most importantly, he feels guilt for both parents. As a former shinigami, Isshin didn't manage to stop the Grand Fisher that took his wife and scarred his child. This guilt always plagues him, despite the fact that he might over exaggerate his woe (he put up a giant mural of his late wife in their kitchen and throws himself against it constantly), he does it to make sure this children don't worry about him. Isshin doesn't want his children to ever see him depressed or mournful, it's not their job to cheer him up. Isshin shows himself to be serious once a year and that's when they go to see Masaki's grave on her death anniversary. Often times, when the kids are asleep, he comes out to her grave and smokes a single cigarette. The same attitude can be seen when he's in battle; most of the time during exposition, Isshin dons the expression of "That's a cool story bro". He doesn't care how awesome you are in battle, your actions speak louder than words (this is also how he parents; grades suck, sex rules!!).
Another example of the switch that Isshin seems to flip from comical to serious is when he avenges his wife's death. The Arrancar prototype keeps asking for Ichigo and Isshin tells him lightheartedly that Ichigo isn't there. Then, as he taunts Isshin and boasts how amazing he is, Isshin stands there and listens him - bored. He doesn't make quite the show, he simply just cuts the other being down without any word. Isshin might act stupid, but he sure as hell isn't. For instance, long before Ichigo starts his training to invade Soul Society, Isshin jumps down from the top of the house to try and land a sneak attack on his son. While on the outside it was because he was being a weird father, it was a ploy to give Ichigo an amulet that he had enchanted to protect Kon in his body. He made a huge fuss, saying that he'd demand it back and that he'd shave his beard if it wasn't returned to him --all so that when Kon was in Ichigo's body, it could be used to save him when Grand Fisher attacked. Though Isshin pretended to be unaware that his son was using a mod soul to inhabit his body, the amulet was never really for Ichigo, but for Kon to protect the body of the son he loves so much.
Then, there's the issue of Isshin hiding his past from his children. Sometime between having children and leaving the Gotei 13, Isshin decided to give up all his powers and live on Earth as a human. He gave up everything because he loved a human woman, even going against the wishes of Soul Society. Whilst Ichigo is on his missions in town, when Kon is in Ichigo's body, Isshin knows that it isn't Ichigo and he makes it a point to tell Kon that whenever he's in Ichigo's body he never used his son's name. Isshin is so protective of his past that he makes it a point to make it seem as if he's the last person to have spiritual pressure. Often, he just credits Masaki for having the gift rather than the fact he himself is a former shinigami.
Speaking of Masaki, Isshin's love for her is something that drives him. When you first meet the pair, Isshin was a Shinigami Captain and the Masaki was a Quincey, a race of people that the Shinigami killed off. When they first meet, and she introduces herself, Isshin thinks "that's so cool" and he doesn't do the "appropriate thing" and bring her in for testing. Instead, he continues to wonder about "that girl who saved his life". Ultimately, he would sacrifice his shinigami powers, his status in Soul Society because he would never forgive himself if someone had to suffer because of him. Even though they had met once, he gave it all up for this woman. It shows that even though he might be a pervert, or a slacker, he's a man of honor and duty in the purest sense and not to a higher authority. His love would grow for her in the purest form, falling in love with her over the course of the time he knew her until he was just "happy to be in her orbit". Masaki is the epitome of a mate for him, a life partner in every sense of the word and someone whom he could never ever replace in his life. Though it's used as comic relief, his shrine to her in their house shows that he's still in love with her, even calling her "his wife". He feels guilt that he could not do anything to save her from her demise, taking revenge on the Grand Fischer but also knowing the real reason why she died.
✖ Character Powers & Skills:High endurance: Since Isshin's children aren't that forgiving (Ichigo often times kicks him out of a window), it just adds to Isshin's stamina and his high tolerance for pain. While it is possible to injure him, one would have to continue to have quite the stamina to do so.
High spiritual pressure: Like his son, Isshin has a high spiritual presence. Shinji and Ichigo could feel it from miles away and he was able to withstand the draining effects of the space between Soul Society and Earth. He's also able to channel his spiritual pressure to different parts of his body, as he did during his fight with Aizen.
Flashsteps: Like most shinigami, Isshin is skilled at flashstep, the ability to move quickly or even in the blink of an eye. He isn't fast like Kuchiki Byakuya or Shihouin Yoruchi because of his body type, but he' s still a lot better at it than Ichigo.
Talismans: While other shinigami use the demon arts to protect themselves (and it's assumable that Isshin knows a few of these spells as well), Isshin's main expertise is the enchantment of amulets and talismans that he gives his children.
Swordsmanship & Combat: Isshin is a master of swordsmanship (due to his training in his previous life as a shinigami), but he's also a master of combat. Engestu, his zanpakuto, is tied to his spiritual pressure (reiatsu) and is activated with the command: burn, Engetsu! Even though he tied his own shinigami powers to Masaki, Isshin cannot summon his bankai - the next level. Day after day, he comes up with new ways to ambush his son: from a telephone pole outside of Ichigo's window, from the windows to the walls etc…
Skilled Doctor: Finally, his human life made him a doctor and he's a damn good one at that too. However, he tends to fail at surgery, hence why he sends those patients to the hospitals, rather than keeping them at the clinic.
Shinigami: For sake of CDC, he'd retain his shinigami abilities in his fake human body. That means that he would have access to his abilities whilst being "human". That means that he can see ghosts, interact with the supernatural and perform the tasks of a shinigami (flashstep, summon Engestsu, enchant talismans etc...) whilst being "mortal".
CHARACTER SAMPLES.
✖ First Person POV: @ the TDM & overflow
✖ Third Person POV:At first, he thinks it's a threat that's trying to break into his house. Aizen's been "dealt with" (as much as Soul Society could deal with him, anyway), but it still makes the hairs stick up on the back of his neck. It's not something super natural, he would be able to sense it, so therefore it was someone who thought it was a good idea to break into the clinic. Before, he had to pretend that he didn't know what was going on in Ichigo's life, that he didn't know what he did when he disappeared for nights on end.
... That was when Ichigo would still talk to him, anyway. There was never a good way for him to explain what had happened to lead them to this point, or to tell Ichigo (and the other children) who they really were. Maybe it was Ichigo trying to sneak back into the house - a sad side that hoped for the very best knew this wasn't the case. Isshin crept through the house, ready to handle whomever was trying to gain access to the house, instead of trying to get his attention through the clinic.
Or they'd end up at the clinic.
"You better not be a boy trying to date my Yuzu." He called out, giving them a chance to re-evaluate their life choices before flipping the lights on and preparing to swing his leg across to nail them in the chest.
He didn't expect to find those people there.
"Shiba, Isshin." They commented, not asked. He stiffened up, back straight before his lips pursed in a thin line under his scruff.
"I don't go by my maiden name." He retorted stiffly, almost uncharacteristic for the very easy-going man. "You might want to look elsewhere."
This was it, Soul Society had found his babies and they were going to take them away for being unnatural. He would fight tooth and nail to ensure that they would have the best shot for the future. They must have noticed that he was looking more aggressive before they spoke:
"Your children are in danger."
Maybe not immediate danger, as he would learn, but it was enough to get him to listen. Isshin suddenly was more cautious about everything, looking up as if waiting to hear footsteps and that he'd have to pretend that they were patients. When he was sure that they could talk, he motioned for them to follow him outside.
They tell him that they're with the CDC, the Cosmic Demolition Corps, and that Earth - and it's many realms - had been selected for future destruction. He had a chance to stop that, to save all those lives in Soul Society and in the Human Realm itself, if he joined.
"My children?" He asked tentatively, looking past them as if he half expected Ichigo to appear out of nowhere.
"We would ensure that they would be protected." As if they knew (they knew) it was a bartering item to get him to join. Sometime before he said yes, he had heard Karin come down the stairs and turn on the lights in the main room and call out his name.
Isshin stared at them long and hard, watching their expressions before giving them a solemn nod. He wanted one last day with his girls punching him in the face before he disappeared.
He just hoped that they wouldn't hate him like Kuukakku and Ganju did.
CHARACTER ITEMS.
✖ Pick a Team:BLUE TEAM: Isshin is a doctor. Even though he has a past of combat duty, he takes his work seriously as a physician. Though he can't perform surgery, he's one of the best doctors in the local community and ran his own clinic.
ORANGE TEAM: During his time as a Shinigami and a Shinigami Captain, he served to protect humans and their dead from Hollows. Orange team would suit him more than say, Red Team, because Isshin was known for taking command and entering the field to protect his own shinigami.
✖ Reason for Joining the CDC: Isshin wants to protect. On a selfish level, he doesn't want to see the planet that his babies live on blown up. On a bigger level, he's fought to ensure that the balance of life and death has been maintained, both when he was a Shinigami and when he wasn't. He would show resistance to what the CDC does, knowing that you can't exchange one life for the slaughter of others, but at the same time he would try to find another way. He would keep the "enemy" alive, or work so that those other worlds didn't have to get destroyed.
